There are several local beaches which are only a short drive away. The nearest is Hemsby (NR29 4JG) which is 7 miles from the cottage and also has a small funfair.
A favourite of ours is Sea Palling (8.5 miles from the cottage) – turn right when you get to the beach and you can walk along the sea wall. We often see seals bobbing up in the water and if you walk for about 2 miles you can frequently see groups of seals on the beach. There is plenty of parking charged at £1.50 per hour. The car parks are open 24 hours so you can have a late-night stroll on the beach if you like!
Winterton on Sea (NR29 4DD) is 8.2 miles away and you can walk on the dunes or down on the beach. There is also a large, cash only car park but this closes at 6 pm in the summer (and earlier in winter).
Horsey (NR29 4EJ) is a similar drive away and here you can walk on the dunes or on the beach and are sure to see the seals.
Slightly further afield are the larger seaside towns of Great Yarmouth and Cromer.
The city of Norwich is 18 miles away and provides excellent entertainment and shopping as well as a Castle and Cathedral. You can also visit Norwich by train from Acle.
Blickling Hall (National Trust) is a Jacobean Mansion set in 4,600 acres with Long Gallery Library holding its nationally important book collection. Near Aylsham NR11 6NF. 21 miles away
Caistor Castle and Motor museum Extensive and varied collection of motor vehicles and other household and farming memorabilia. With the opportunity of walking round the historic castle. Check opening times before you travel. (Telephone 01664 567707)
Norfolk is blessed with numerous nature reserves full details of which can be found on the Norfolk Wildlife Trust website
Bewilderwood, is an award winning forest adventure park located near Hoveton, NR12 8JW, 10.6 miles away
We really recommend the pub in Thurne called The Lion and always receive a warm welcome as well as good food and drink. Best of all, it’s a 2-minute walk down the lane from the cottage!
There are also lots of lovely pubs all within a short drive away. We have tried and can recommend, The Nelson’s Head at Horsey, The White Horse at Upton, The Falgate Inn at Potter Higham and The Greyhound Inn at Hickling Green. Please bear in mind that during the holiday season you will usually need to book to guarantee a table.
We also recommend Dunes Café at Acle Bridge, especially for breakfast and for sitting watching the boats go by. They also run another favourite at Waxham Barns, NR12 0DZ near Sea Palling. Poppy’s at Winterton on Sea is worth a visit for breakfast or lunch, as is Cafe Charlotte at Stalham. If you fancy a walk along the river, Potter Heigham is 3 miles away with its café, pubs and shops.
